MATH WORKSHOP
Let me start by giving you a brief overview of my Math Workshop structure/ rotations/ schedule. When I was planning this structure over the summer, I had purchased a couple Math Workshop Guides on TpT to get me started and then I tweaked them to apply to my own classroom, comfort level, and style. The guides I found most helpful were:
- Guide to Organizing & Managing Math Workshop with Guided Math {eBook/Printables} by Clutter-Free Classroom
- A Teacher's Guide To Math Workshop / Guided Math by Terri Thornton
LOOKING FOR A COMPLETE GUIDE TO MATH WORKSHOP AND STANDARDS-BASED GRADING AND ASSESSING TO SUPPORT YOUR WORKSHOP STRUCTURE?! I created this just for you!
4th GRADE COMMON CORE MATH MEGA BUNDLE {Standards-Based Grading & Assessments} by Elyse Jahnke
- 5th Grade MEGA BUNDLE - Coming Soon!
MATH WORKSHOP STRUCTURE: In our math workshop, we have 3 groups which each go through four (4) twenty minute rotations daily.
THIS IS OUR DAILY ROTATION SCHEDULE!
The expectations for each station are explained on the "Station Expectation Cards" below:
HOW WE DETERMINE GROUPS: We determine groups based on the PRE-ASSESSMENTS. (You can find the CCSS Pre- and Post- Assessments at my TpT store!!) :-)

We have found that grouping the students by ability allows EVERY STUDENT to soar! Students who have always been super high (and bored!) in math are now challenged and engaging in passionate mathematics debates and conversations with one another; students who were always middle-of-the-road math students are now shining leaders; students who were always low (and frustrated!) with math are finally getting the attention they need to master every common core standard! IT IS BEAUTIFUL!!! :-)
ASSESSING: Again, I pre-assess for each unit. The students keep a student data notebook (you can also buy this at my TpT store!) to track their progress with every standard. We use the CCSS units and go standard by standard. At the end of each standard, we have the students take a POM (Proof Of Mastery Assessment) -- which you can also buy at my TpT store! --so we can check in to make sure each student has achieved mastery with each standard.
Sometimes we find that EVERYONE has mastered the concept on the first try. Other times we realize that maybe our lowest group needs a few more days to master the concept and retake the POM. For some, we notice that a few students need some reteaching. Regardless, we are able to have quick feedback (the POMs literally take like 15 minutes to grade!!) to guide our instruction. (I am the WORST at keeping up with grading! My POMs are so short and to the point that I can literally finish grading them by the time the students are all done taking it!! I just grade them as they get turned in!! I have three folders -- 1 for each math group -- and they turn their POMs in to their group folder. Then, I color coded my grade book based on their groups, so it's super fast and easy to record!!!) When they get their POM back, they keep their assessments (including their pretests and all their POMs) in the BACK POCKET of their data notebook folder. That way, at the end of the unit, they have all their POMs and their pre-test (which looks just like the post-test but with different numbers) to study for their FINAL END-OF-UNIT EXAM!!!! (dun..dun..dun!!!)

STUDENT DATA NOTEBOOK: The students have 5 duo-tang folders -- 1 for each math CCSS unit. In the duo-tang, they keep the actual data notebook pages and homework log. In the front pocket they keep all of their homework & independent practice sheets. In the back pocket they keep all of their ASSESSMENTS.

***AT THE END OF THE UNIT: After they take their POST-ASSESSMENT, they put it in the assessment pocket of their data notebook folder and turn the WHOLE FOLDER IN!!! That way, we have ALL of their hw/independent practice sheets, their data notebook, and ALL of their assessments for the unit for when we do their report cards!!! It's AMAZING!!!***
